Captioning Explained Print

How does captioning work?

  1. A captioner takes the spoken words down on a steno machine.  The code from the steno machine is instantaneously translated into English and is sent to a viewing screen or monitor.
  2. The whole process typically takes a couple of seconds, and enables people that are deaf and hard of hearing to have access to and to be a part of an event or  program.
  3. In a Christian setting, captioning allows people with hearing loss to be able to “hear” and allows them to educate themselves in the Christian way of life. Captions can also be integrated with video, and both captions and the video appear on a viewing screen.
